Peer Review Policy

Editors are responsible for supporting the review and revision cycle for each publication period. They are expected to follow the established review system for each submission cycle:

Assignment of Manuscript

Editors receive 1 submission to review during each cycle, depending on capacity.

Editing and Revision Timeline

  • The editing and revision process for each volume is anticipated to take 3 to 4 months.
  • There will be 3 to 4 revision cycles per volume (depending on paper quality and efficiency).
  • Editors will provide constructive, actionable comments through Google Document suggestions/comments.

Good feedback that meets Canopy’s expectations includes (but is not limited to):

  • Grammar and Punctuation: Are there grammatical or punctuation issues that interfere with readability? Please focus heavily on the writer’s usage of commas, apostrophes, semicolons, colons, and em dashes.
  • Structure and Flow: Does the paper progress logically, with smooth transitions between paragraphs, and a coherent overall structure?
  • Accurate Citations: Are citations consistent and correctly formatted to MLA, APA, or Chicago format?
  • Argument Organization: Is the central argument clear and supported by well-developed points?
  • Methodological Clarity: Are the research methods (hypotheses, data, analyses, etc) clearly shown and discussed for readers to understand how the conclusions were reached?
  • Significance and Relevance: Does the paper clearly convey why the topic matters to real-world circumstances? Does it contribute to general social science conversations?

Editors are expected to review the revised version within 5 to 7 days of the writer’s revision deadline, and must confirm whether the revisions address prior feedback and meet Canopy’s standards.

Team Workshops and Meetings

Both writers and editors are expected to attend team-wide meetings, check-ins, and workshops throughout the publication process. These meetings are meant to discuss evaluations with Canopy’s editorial leadership, maintain consistent progress through publication launch, and connect with peers in the cohort.
